States throughout the country are raising speed limits over 75mph. Truck tires are often not tested at these speeds, and traveling this fast could lead to blown tires and accidents.
A recent report by the Associated Press is drawing attention to what could be the next big issue in truck safety: increased speed limits.
Speed limits are determined by states and a handful of states throughout the country are posting speed limits well above capabilities of many heavy truck tires. Truck tires are tested to travel at certain speed limits and none are tested for travel over 75 miles per hour. Traveling over these speed could lead to overheating, ultimately contributing to a blown tire. Blown tires can cause an imbalance in the truck and may result in a loss of control, potentially leading to a truck accident.
According to the report Texas, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota have speed limits at or above 80 mph while Missouri, Nevada and Washington allow limits of 75 or higher.
Higher speed limit could fuel push for speed-limiting devices
An article in The Hill, a publication addressing policy, politics and election campaigns, also addressed the issue. The report included a quote by the president of the American Trucking Association, or ATA, calling for states to “do the right thing – the safe thing – when it comes to speed limits for all vehicles and stem the dangerous tide of higher ones.”
In addition to encouraging states to reduce speed limits, the ATA is also pushing legislators to move forward on a federally mandated requirement for commercial trucks to install devices on-board that would limit these vehicles to speeds of 65 mph or lower. According to the group, roughly 70 percent of trucks are currently using these devices, but full compliance would further reduce the risk of accidents.
