The Travelers Institute, the public policy division of a leading provider of property casualty insurance, hosted an event called Every Second Matters back in June to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The institute used new research data to show that the issue becomes more prominent in the summer, so California residents who are planning to take road trips soon should take note.
The data came from a study by TrueMotion, a smartphone telematics platform. Using sensor data from its distracted driving mobile app, called TrueMotion Family, researchers analyzed the behavior of over 20,000 drivers between January 2017 and May 2018. They found that drivers were the most distracted in the months of June, July and August.
NHTSA states that more people are on the roads in the summer, and that drivers travel 20 percent more miles during this season. The administration has also estimated that there are 29 percent more road deaths in June, July and August than in December, January and February. Travelers intends to get the conversation started about distracted driving so that eventually it may be as much a part of the public’s consciousness as drunk driving or driving without a seat belt. It released a report that also gives practical tips for safe driving.
When auto accidents occur because one of the drivers was distracted or negligent in some other way, those who are injured as a result may be eligible for financial compensation. They might find it advisable to have the assistance of an experienced attorney when attempting to seek a settlement from the at-fault driver’s insurance company.
